Tangkahan options

In Tangkanan, you can join several optional activities: elephant riding and helping out to wash these animals in the river, different types of treks through the rainforest, tubing and caving.

These activities can be pre-arranged through Indotracks, or you can book it on the spot by yourself.

*Elephant ride through the jungle, 1 hour
Elephants are stationed in Tangkahan to patrol the borders of Gunung Leuser National Park. Friday’s they are on duty, which means they are not available for rides with visitors. On other days, elephant rides can be made 3 times a day (10.00, 11.00 and 14.00; times and days subject to change!). The elephants use a track through the dense jungle around Tangkahan. Before or after the ride, you can help wash the elephants in the river (you can also join this without taking a ride, simply by giving a donation): daily at 08.30 and 15.30. Both men and animal truly enjoy this activity, expect to get wet! If you want to ride an elephant, we recommend to pre-arrange this through us, because of limited availability. We will do our best to book a ride, but please be aware that because of circumstances beyond our control sometimes the ride can not be confirmed or gets canceled (any payments of course will be returned).

*Jungle treks
Starting from Tangkahan, there are several possible jungle treks. Depending on your time and interest, you can join a 2 hour, 4 hour or 6 hour trek. The 6-hour trek can also be combined with tubing and caving activities. You can pre-arrange these activities through Indotracks or book it yourself on the spot.
